2011 Potentate’s Messages

December 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Well, the year is winding down–one more article to go.  Very Important–December stated meeting (December 13) is election night.  As of now, there are two candidates for Oriental Guide–Bruce Urban and Calvin Carlton.  If you do not know them or have questions, get them answered before stated meeting.  Both of these guys would welcome a phone call from you if you have questions (Bruce Urban —  940-642-5284;  Calvin Carlton — 940-781-5196).  NOBLES!  SHOW UP AND VOTE!

Now for a MEMBERSHIP dues status update.  In October I reported that 52 nobles had unpaid balances (28 owed 2011 and 24 owed both 2010 and 2011).  Currently those numbers are 38 owes a balance (23 owes 2011 and 15 owes both 2010 and 2011).  If you have questions about setting up a bank draft or other arrangements, call Donna at Maskat.  Also, talking membership, last month I asked you to support Jeff Gainer, our 2012 Membership Chairman (see his Article in this issue).  He is already “hard at it.”  Give him the support he needs and let’s get our membership growing.

Thanks to Edgar Shockley for ramrodding the garage sale–and thanks to his whole crew–especially Patsy Bird; she controlled the money.  I believe Maskat received about $1,300 from the sales.  Thanks also to all who donated items.  I also want to express my appreciation to Chief Rabban, Poney Thompson, who coordinated clearing the storage shed in preparation for the garage sale, and all the Nobles and Ladies who helped him get it done.  I think there is “walking around” room in the shed again, first time in years.

December Football Sundays are the 4th and 11th.  If you were not with us at the November 13 game, you missed some great food.  I made a huge stew and everyone brought cornbread–several different kinds.  It is always like a tailgate party.  It was great to see Dave and Sonia Corbett out and about.  Thanks to all for your support for all the Foot Ball Sundays this year.  Remember that we will be having RIBS on December 11th (my last as Potentate)–come out and enjoy the game and some great food and fellowship!

This THANKS! I’m saving for last because it means a lot to me.  THANKS RAINBOW!  As always, the Divan was invited to Rainbow’s annual Thanksgiving dinner.  I cannot express how honored and privileged I was to receive the framed, miniature, white Masonic Lambskin Apron.  The presentation ceremony was impressive and moving–brought tears to my eyes–a real feel-good moment.  Thanks again Young Ladies!

Hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with family and/or friends.

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS.  Let’s keep it fun.

Terry Martin, Potentate

November 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

First of all, I want to remind all of you about Maskat’s Garage Sale on November 12th.  One of the things we want to accomplish, along with raising some money, is cleaning out the storage shed.  Hopefully, sometime between now and the Garage Sale, we can get someone to identify all the “stuff” that needs to be included in the garage sale.  There are items in the shed that have been there for years.  If we aren’t going to use them, we need to get rid of them! UNITS! If you have items in the storage building, please come out to Maskat (no later than November 5) and MARK anything you have that needs to stay where it is.  Unless items are identified as needing to be retained, they will be included in the garage sale.

Our Chief Rabban has accepted the “onerous chore” of organizing the effort to move all the “stuff” for the garage sale into the ball room by the Oasis.  That can be done any time after the Ceremonial on October 29.  He will needs lots of help, and I would appreciate you all helping him out.  I think we are going to try to get a group together on Saturday, November 5.  Please call Poney (733-5737) and volunteer your assistance.  Let’s get the storage building in good shape and also make the Garage Sale a success.  If you have items to donate to the sale, bring them to Maskat (Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM).

Upcoming Football Sundays include noon games on November 6th, 13th, and 20th.  There will be no game on Sunday, November 27. Come join us.

Thanks again, to all you Nobles who paid for your Circus Noble Tickets.  You have gone down in history as one of the Nobles on the “Circus Honor Roll.”  Your support of Maskat is greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to all who participated in the Hospital Chili Cook Off at P2.  Don’t know yet how much was raised for the Shriners Hospitals for Children but every bit helps.

I now want to talk about “MEMBERSHP.”  Retaining and gaining members is the lifeblood of the Shrine.  In October, our future 2012 Membership Chairman, Jeff Gainer, attended the Membership Chairman Seminar at Tampa.  He brought back so many good ideas that it will make your head swim.  He is also a current member of the Membership Committee and will be “acting” Chairman the rest of this year.  All this said, I will take it as a special favor if all of you will help him in any way you can.  I am sure he is going to have a lot of questions for many of you.

Jeff also has a wealth of expertise in the area of computers and website maintenance.  In case you have not check it out, you should look at our new website format.  The whole look has changed for the better.  One addition is the MEMBERSHIP tab on the HOME page.  Jeff added this page and will use it to keep everyone informed about issues related to membership.  He will also be working with Donna to keep the website information current. Thanks Jeff! — for all your work, past, present, and future.  Just keep up that enthusiasm and excitement.  We all need it.  Maybe it will be contagious.

Hope all of you have a Happy Thanksgiving with family and/or friends.

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS.  Let’s keep it fun.

Terry Martin, Potentate

October 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

We had a few happenings during September that I want to mention.  First, we rescheduled Maskat’s annual garage sale from September 10th to November 12th so you have plenty of time to clean out your garage (or whatever) and bring some items out for the sale.  If you want to help with the sale, contact Edgar Shockley (cell 940-224-3711).

A great big thanks to Mark Elgin and everyone else who worked the Sporting Clay Shoot on September 17.  The event made approximately $2,300.00.  Fantastic!

I also want to thank Mike Knox for again serving as Circus Chairman.  Thanks also to all the Nobles and Ladies who helped not only with everything leading up to the Circus on 20 and 21 September but were at the event helping wherever they could.

On another note, the first Football Sunday (September 18) was great fun.  The Cowboy win made it even more so.  Our newest member, Noble Eric Binnion, was there.  He joined at the September Stated Meeting on Tuesday and attended his first Shrine function on the next Sunday.  Great!  This is a good example of “Mentoring” at work.  For those of you that are not aware, the Wild Fez Unit presented a “New Member Project” to the Divan which was approved at the April 2011 Divan Meeting.  The project called for implementing a “New Member Mentoring Committee” staffed by Wild Fez members.  When a new Noble is brought into the Shrine, a committee member (“Mentor”) is assigned to him.  At that first meeting, the Mentor will introduce him to the various units and for the next six months will keep him informed about, and invited to, all Shrine events and activities.  During his first six-months of membership, the new Noble will also have his meal and one drink paid for at stated meetings.  If we can make these new Nobles “feel at home” and get them involved right away, then we will have a much better chance of keeping them.  It has been suggested that each Unit have a representative on the “New Member Mentoring Committee.”  Contact Jeff Gainer, President of Wild Fez Unit, if you are interested or have questions about it.

Update on status of membership dues.  We now have 52 Nobles with unpaid dues–28 owe for the current year (2011) and 24 Nobles have not paid either 2010 or 2011 dues.  The 24 will be subject to suspension of membership on December 31, 2011, unless their dues are paid before then (or other arrangements made for dues owed). If extenuating circumstances are making it difficult for you to pay your dues, please call me or call Donna at Maskat’s office.  If you want to stay a member, we will work with you to make sure you can.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

October 7 & 8, 2011.  DEAD COW COOK-OFF.  The Provost Guard and Shotgun Units are organizing and running this event as a unit fund raiser.

October 22, 2011.  Shrine Hospital Chili Cook-Off at P2 (Chuck Hawthorne – 723-1219)

October 27, 2011. Blended Whiskey/Cigar Night.  See article in this Wildcat.

October 29, 2011.  Maskat Ceremonial at 4:00 PM.  Come on out and meet our new Nobles.  Make them and their Ladies feel welcomed.

Coming in November.  Another RIB dinner.  It’s in the planning stage.

Another BIG THANKS to all of you!!  Everything you do in support of Maskat is appreciated.  Together we can “grow” Maskat!!

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS.  Let’s keep it fun.

Terry Martin, Potentate

 September 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Well, let’s hope this “heat wave” will end soon. We really need some relief. I suppose it was good that August was not a really busy month for Maskat. As it was, we had a couple of nobles that suffered with heat-related problems that required medical attention.

Shrinefest was the main August activity. I want to thank all the people who donated hours of time and effort to make it happen. Your support of this Maskat function is greatly appreciated.

The past couple of months, I have addressed the status of membership dues. We now have 55 Nobles with unpaid dues. Of that number, 30 owe for the current year (2011). When next year’s dues are assessed in December of this year, they will owe for two years. Another 25 Nobles have not paid either 2010 or 2011 dues. These 25 Nobles will be subject to suspension of membership on December 31, 2011, unless their dues are paid before then (or other arrangements made for dues owed). If you are one of these 25 Nobles facing suspension in December and there are extenuating circumstances making it difficult for you to pay your dues, please call me and I will see what we can do to help you. You can also call Donna at Maskat’s office. Your membership is invaluable to Maskat. If you want to stay a member, we will work with you to make sure you can.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

  •  September 10, 2011. The Maskat Garage Sale will begin at 7:00 am on September 10, 2011, and extend until 2:00 pm. Donations for the garage sale can be brought to Maskat Shrine Center. Items will be stored in the southern most area of the ballroom (next to the Oasis). Everything, except non-working appliances, will be accepted; so bring all that “stuff” you haven’t used or seen in the past five years and donate it to Maskat for the garage sale. It is definitely for a good cause. If you have any questions about items that will be accepted or would like to help with the garage sale, please call Edgar Shockley: Home Phone: 940-766-0605; Cell: 940-224-3711.

  • September 17, 2011. Sporting Clay Shoot. See September Wildcat for details.
  • September 18, 2011. First FOOTBALL SUNDAY at Maskat–it’s a noon game.
  • September 21 &22, 2011 (Wednesday and Thursday). Noble Circus tickets were mailed the third week of August. Maskat keeps all money paid for these tickets. If you are unable to support the circus in any other way, please purchase your tickets. It will be greatly appreciated. For those of you that want to work at the Circus, contact Chairman Mike Knox (631-4738). As always, if you possibly can, we ask you to attend at least one of the performances and WEAR YOUR FEZ!!! It is very good PR for Maskat.
  • September 26, 2011. Second FOOTBALL SUNDAY–except it’s a Monday night game.
  • October 7 & 8, 2011. DEAD COW COOK-OFF. The Provost Guard and Shotgun Units are organizing and running this event as a unit fund raiser. See this Wildcat for flyer.
  • October 27, 2011. Blended Whiskey/Cigar Night. See article in this Wildcat.
  • Coming this Fall. Another RIB dinner. It’s in the planning stage.

Hope you Nobles and Ladies can come out and support these upcoming events. Thanks all of you!! Everything you do in support of Maskat and its various functions is appreciated. Let’s keep Maskat strong!!

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS. Let’s keep it fun.

August 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Hopefully all of you survived the “warm” June and July weather without serious consequences. In spite of raging temperature, we had a good turnout for the 16 July Fajita Dinner and the Masonic Fish Fry on the 23rd. Pretty good for a “dark” month. Thanks to all of you that worked to make it happen and all of you that came out and supported these events.

On the same note, a special thanks to Wayne Morrow for getting the 27 Airmen from Sheppard to the Fish Fry including arranging with Skylark for transportation. These Airmen will provide cleanup after Shrinefest, with Skylark again providing transportation for them for that event.

During June, Maskat received several comments about “our ragged old flag.” In case you did not know the whole story, there was a mechanical malfunction that prevented us from raising or lowering the flag. Thanks to Noble Tyler Renick, we were able to get it fixed for the cost of the supplies needed to repair it. Sometime last year, Tyler actually replaced the cable on the flag pole (again at the cost of supplies). We all owe him a big thanks!

I also want to thank someone else that is always “helping out”–Joe Kirk! He has saved us several dollars on telephone repair costs over the past few years and especially the last couple of months. Conner can now hear on his phone without any static whatever.

Well Oil Bowl is now in the rear-view mirror. A Big Thanks to Chairman Gary Hill and everyone that worked that event. As you know, this was Gary’s first year as Chairman, and there was definitely a “learning curve” for several of us. Let’s make next year even better.

Last but not least, I want to thank Mike McCarty for donating the pipe to replace the fence along the right side of the drive as you turn off Hatton Road onto Shrine land. That temporary fence is being replaced with a permanent fence. He also donated pipe for the permanent fencing installed last year. Thanks Mike! You have saved us a bunch.

We have a long-time Shriner, Howard Copeland, who recently sold his business and retired. Over the years he has been a big supporter of Maskat and its various activities. Thanks Howard! We do appreciate all you have done for us.

In the June Wildcat, I addressed the status of membership dues payment. Since then we have dropped from 70 Nobles to 58 Nobles who have unpaid dues. Of the 58 that have unpaid dues, 25 owe for both 2010 and 2011. That is 25 Nobles that will be subject to suspension of membership on December 31, 2011, unless their dues are paid before then. I want to encourage all of you to get current with your dues. If you need a payment plan, call Maskat.

Dates to Remember:
August 20, 2011. Shrinefest–Go to http://www.shrinefest.com for details.
10 September, 2011. Garage sale at Maskat–details to come. Check Maskat website.
17 September 2011. Sporting Clay Shoot. See September Wildcat for details.
September 21 &22, 2011 (Wednesday and Thursday). For those of you that want to or will be working the Circus, contact
Chairman Mike Knox (631-4738).
October 7 & 8, 2011. DEAD COW COOK-OFF. The Provost Guard and Shotgun Units are organizing and running this event as a unit fund raiser.
October 27, 2011. Blended Whiskey/Cigar Night. More details to follow.
Coming this Fall. Another RIB dinner. It’s in the planning stage.

May 30 – June 2, 2012 (TSA). Something for your consideration. Next year, TSA will be in Tyler. We will be staying at the Baymont Inn. They have a total of 44 rooms, and we are reserving 40 of them (7 will be for the DIVAN). Reservations must be made NLT April 10th and will be on a first-come-gets-the-room-basis. This year we used 61 rooms in Amarillo. That should give you a good idea of how important it will be to get your hotel room reserved as soon as possible. Again, Maskat will make the reservations for you.
As always, Thanks Folks!– for everything you do.

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS. Let’s keep it fun.

June 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

May was another busy month. Seems like I have said that about every month starting with my first article. For some of us, the second week was just FUN!! Eleven couples joined Roma and me for the Potentate’s Cruise. I hope all of you had as much fun as Roma and I did. If you were not there you missed seeing Charles Dean displaying some of his many hidden talents. A special thanks to Greg and Cathy Stockton for organizing the whole thing and to Poney and Susie Thompson for escorting us to and picking us up from Galveston where the Cruise Ship departed. They even had food and drinks iced down for the return bus trip. Thank you!! Greg, Cathy, Poney and Susie.

Also want to thank Rick Neas for contributing his expertise to Maskat with reference to building maintenance. The health department informed us we had to replace the kitchen ceiling tiles, and Rick worked with Larry to ensure we found and bought the proper tiles. Thanks Rick.

Dates to Remember:
July 23, 2011. Maskat’s Membership Chairmen (Brad Rodgers and Alan Donaldson) have scheduled another Family Fish Fry/Shrimp Boil in an effort to recruit new members. This year it will be at Maskat in air-conditioned comfort.
September 21 &22, 2011 (Wednesday and Thursday). THE CIRCUS IS COMING TO TOWN!! For those of you that want to or will be working the Circus, contact Chairman Mike Knox (631-4738).

Another important issue–we have approximately 70 Nobles that have not yet paid their 2011 dues (some of those also have not paid 2010). At the end of December each year, Nobles that are 2 years in arrears are subject to suspension of membership. I want to encourage all of you to get current with your dues. If you need a payment plan, see Donna. She will set you up so you can make monthly payments (or bank draft) till you are current. If you set up a bank draft to “catch up,” you will be given a “conditional” membership card that entitles you to all privileges except voting, and, when you are current, your regular card will be mailed to you.

Work continues for the Oil Bowl. This year the Hall of Fame Banquet will be at the MPEC (seating for 1,000). The speaker will be Coach Brad McCoy, father of Colt McCoy from University of Texas, now with the Cleveland Browns. The event will be catered, and we need a count of attendees. So, get out to Maskat and buy your banquet tickets now. It will help us plan numbers for attendance and will show your support for the Oil Bowl.

By the time you read this, TSA will be in the “rear-view mirror.” Next month we will congratulate the “winners.” Approximately 60 Nobles had registered when this article was written.

May’s Miscellaneous Fundraisers. The May 21 Rib Dinner was a rousing success. Approximately $900 (net profit) was raised–this included $33 for “kids’ meals” ($1 each) given to the Transportation fund. FANTASTIC! As always, Gordon and Patsy Bird made handling the money look easy. Thanks Y’all. Edgar “Digger” Shockley’s FRIED PIES were delicious. We did “Make it big!!” I can’t possibly remember the names of all people I want to thank. At least 9 Nobles showed up on Friday night (6:30 PM til — ) for the “rib cutting.” We started the cookers at 7:30 AM on Saturday. Thanks Daughters of the Nile for breakfast for the cookers (their Brunch was same day). At least 140 plus kids showed up to eat at 6:30 PM. We had a whole slew of Nobles and Ladies cooking, cleaning, and serving. Saw lots of enthusiasm. Some of us did not leave until almost midnight. Again, a BIG THANKS to all (workers and eaters). We also had $76 income from the surcharge at collected for the Stated Meeting Meal.

Our next “Miscellaneous Fundraiser Event” is in the planning. Several requested a repeat of the “Homemade Ice Cream Competition.” We will keep that in mind. Additionally, on October 27 there will be a Blended Whiskey/Cigar Night. More details to follow.

As always, Thanks Folks!– for coming out and working all our events. If not working, thanks for participating and spending the money. If we all pull together, we can get more members involved. Let’s keep making Maskat bigger and better!!

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS. Let’s keep it fun.

May 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

For some of you, April may not have seemed quite so busy as March, but for those of you that were involved in the Easter Egg Hunt, Hospital Golf Tournament, and Oil Bowl preparations things continued “full steam ahead.” Thanks to all of you who worked on the Easter Egg Hunt.

By the time you get this publication, the Maskat Shrine (in association with Wichita Falls Fire Fighters) Galveston Burn Center Benefit Golf Tournament will we history. The time, effort, and financial support of individuals and organizations are too numerous to list in this message. I just want to express my sincere appreciation to all of the “compadres” and “cohorts” of Chairman Ronnie James who were associated with putting this event together and supporting it. This is our largest Hospital fundraiser — so the Kids Thank You Too.

Preparations for the Oil Bowl are proceeding fast and furious. The request for Nobles to purchase tickets (4 general admission for $36) will be mailed early May. We are also going to initiate a program for purchasing “annual reserved seating” in lieu of Nobles purchasing the general admission tickets (see form in this publication). You will still get the request to purchase the general admission tickets which you can ignore. On that note, I would like to apologize to anyone receiving the letter that asked us not to mail it to you. This mailing is done using “bulk mail” rates which is a fraction of regular postage rate; and it is very difficult to pull one or two letters.
A little reminder about TSA registration and hotel reservations. If you have not already signed up for TSA, you need to get that done especially if you plan to stay with the rest of Maskat at the Hampton Inn-East in Amarillo. Our block of rooms will be “unblocked” after May 2. We can still make reservations at the hotel after that on a “space available basis” for the same rate. Get your forms to Donna as soon as you can.

April’s income from “Miscellaneous Fundraisers” included the extra $2 collected for Stated Meeting Meal–$88. Don’t forget our May 21 “Miscellaneous Fundraiser”–Rib Dinner & BBQ with Edgar “Digger” Shockley’s FRIED PIES. Let’s make it big!! Additionally, on October 27 there will be a Blended Whiskey/Cigar Night. More details to follow. The March Cigar/Scotch event made $500 so let’s see if we can beat that with this one.
Last but not least, I want to remind you that May Stated Meeting has been moved to the 17th. The Potentate’s trip extends from May 8 through May 14.

April 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Talk about busy, March was full of lots of good things starting on March 1st with National Pancake Day the local IHOPs. Thanks to Gary Hill for heading the event and Eric Skipper for getting the Shriners out in force. A check for $3,854.21 was presented to Galveston Hospital by PP Terry Huff, Galveston Hospital Representative.

Next (March 3-6) was the OG Trip. As usual there were a couple of hiccups–golf was rained out, etc. With 40 plus travelers, overall, the trip was great fun. For about 10 people (some of which have been Shriners for awhile), it was their first OG Trip and hospital visitation. If they didn’t know already, they learned what being a “Shriner” is all about.

The following weekend was both Shotgun and Clown Units Mid-Winter in San Antonio. Attending with me as part of the Shotgun Unit were PP Mark Elgin and PP/Treasurer Greg Stockton. We were able to “clown around” at the other Mid-Winter. Billy JR won 1st place in “something,” and the Shotgun Unit received 4 trophies. Provost Guard Mid-Winter is March 25 and 26; Golf Mid-Winter is April 13-15. Good Luck to you folks!

Our March “Miscellaneous Fundraisers” (10 March, Scotch/Cigar Night & 19 March, Catfish Dinner) did very well. Whether or not you like Scotch, you would have enjoyed the information presented by Russ Kempton. Everything from how Scotch is made, what goes into it, barrels used, how it’s stored, etc. Impressive! The turnout for the Catfish Dinner was fantastic. Thanks to everyone–workers and eaters. Special thanks to Divan Ladies for decorations, Erik Skipper for bringing the “bouncy house” for entertaining the kids, Greg for getting food and keeping cost to a minimum, and all the others that donated time and labor cooking and serving the meal. We don’t want to forget those involved in the “Home Made Ice Cream” contest. Thanks Amy James for managing the judging, and congratulations to the winner, Callie Reed.

The Foot Patrol Washer Tournament on March 20 was another fun event and unit fundraiser. Roma and I placed 2nd in couples. Thanks everyone for your support. Unit functions/activities are important to Maskat.

April will bring the Easter Egg Hunt–egg stuffing on Sunday the 17th and the Egg Hunt on the 23rd. April’s major event is the Hospital Benefit Golf Tournament on Friday, April 29 (Calcutta is April 28th). If you are not signed up to work and would like to help, Call Chairman Ronnie James.

Future “Miscellaneous” fundraiser, Saturday, March 21–Rib Dinner & BBQ with a special bonus–Edgar “Digger” Shockley’s FRIED PIES. Let’s have another SPECTACULAR turnout! Also, in the “talking” stage sometime in October is a Blended Whiskey/Cigar Night. Stay tuned for more details. All of these “fun time” get-togethers raise money to support Maskat. The more we have and the more you support them (working and participating), the less we will have to depend on just one or two major fundraisers(Shrinefest and Circus) to operate Maskat.

Again, a special thanks to all you folks that come out and work all our events. By the same token, we can’t do it without the people who participate–spend the money. Let’s all pull together–get more members involved. We can do it! Make Maskat bigger and better.

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS. Let’s keep it fun.

Terry Martin, Potentate

March 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

First, I want to thank everyone for their hard work on the Super Bowl. At present, we estimate the event made a profit of $2,000. Again, thanks for all the work you did to make it a success.

Second, a friendly reminder that the OG Trip is happening 3-6 March. It includes a visit to the Shreveport Shriners Hospital for Children which makes the trip very worthwhile.

Good Luck to all units that are heading to March Mid-Winters.

How about this SPRING weather! Yesterday was “shorts and sandals” time. After all the snow, ice, and generally cold weather, I am sure this is a welcome change to all of you. It uplifts the spirit and reinvigorates energy levels. With this said, hopefully many of you are ready to “roll up your sleeves and get busy” with the upcoming Maskat activities and events.

Do not forget the “first ever” SCOTCH/CIGAR NIGHT AT MASKAT. On March 10, Maskat and Local Boys Liquor is co-sponsoring this event. Last month’s Wildcat had a very good description of the event. Call Ken Simpson at Local Boys (692-1002) for a reservation. Net proceeds will be used in support Maskat and are part of the “2010 Miscellaneous Temple Fundraisers” income. We plan to have several of these “Miscellaneous Fundraisers” this year (see this Wildcat for information on the “Maskat All-You-Can-Eat Catfish Dinner” scheduled for March 19 at 6:30 pm). Your support and participation in these events will be greatly appreciated. If we can raise enough money on these “miscellaneous” events, we will not need to ask the Nobility to support a “raffle” or some other type of fundraiser that many of us find difficult to execute.

Work has already begun on the annual Hospital Golf Tournament (April 29) and the Oil Bowl (June 11). I am sure both those chairmen (Ronnie James and Gary Hill) welcomes your help. Our next “big” fundraiser after the Oil Bowl, is Shrinefest (Friday, August 19). Shrinefest Chairman Mark Terry would also gladly accept your help.

If you happen to fly Southwest anytime soon, be sure and thank the pilot and crew for Southwest’s donation of 500 free passes for patient transportation to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners International has the free passes, and Maskat applies for the “voucher” when we have a patient that can use Southwest to get to the hospital. We have one patient that goes to Chicago about twice a year. This can potentially save Maskat’s Transportation Fund about $600 per trip for that patient.

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS. Let’s keep it fun.

Terry Martin, Potentate

February 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

I would like to say “thanks” to everyone for their support during my time on the DIVAN and especially since I have become Potentate. I look forward to serving as your Potentate. Roma and I want express our sincere appreciation to the Divan and Past Potentates for their support the past four years. Without their help, we would never have had this opportunity to entertain and serve you this year.

I know all of you will join me in thanking Bob and Winnie for their service to Maskat during the past year while Bob was Potentate and for the four years prior on the Divan. The cake they provided at installation was a “work of art.” Thanks Bob and Winnie!

The Daughters of the Nile provided a great meal for the installation. Thanks Ladies. We also want to congratulate Charles and Deanna Dean on his installation as Oriental Guide. They have five fun years ahead.

Hope all of you had as much fun as Roma and I did at the Potentate’s Ball. Thanks for coming. After looking at the pictures and seeing the amount Oasis receipts for the event, I believe it was a success.

Coming up next (February 3-5) is Divan MidWinter. All of the Divan and a couple of Past Potentates are planning to attend. We will get back on Saturday in time for SUPERBOWL SUNDAY the next day on February 6. I want to encourage all of you Nobles, Ladies, and Friends to come to Maskat and share the fun. Remember the Oasis will be open at 2:00 pm.

There will be a signup party for the Potentate’s Trip on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at 6:30 P.M. Snacks will be provided. Come out and sign up for the cruise. For more information, see the announcement in this Wildcat or go to the HOME page of Maskat’s website: www.maskatshrine.com.

A very special thanks to the WILD FEZZES for taking care of the cleanup after the Potentate’s Ball. Too often in the past, the DIVAN has done all the cleanup after various functions with very little help. All the Divan Ladies expressed their appreciation to me when they discovered they were not required to participate in this “custodial” function. Again, a big THANKS.

LAST but not LEAST, I cannot find the words to express my appreciation and love for #1–ROMA!! She stands by me and “works her tail off to make me look good.” I cannot thank her enough.

Don’t forget, we are doing it for the KIDS. Let’s keep it fun.

Terry Martin, Potentate

January 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Wow, is it really over!?!  2010 is gone and the last five/ten years have gone by so quickly it almost seems like a dream.  Winnie and I were looking back over the past few years, and it seems almost impossible to have attended so many meetings, parties, functions and taken so many trips with our Shrine family.  We have learned that if you want to have fun while supporting a great philanthropy, there is nothing like Maskat Shrine.  Thank you for the lesson.  Moving to Wichita Falls is one of the best decisions we have ever made.  We treasure all of the memories we made with our friends.

I want tro thank all of you for your participation in our Shrine functions this year; without our Nobles and Ladies giving generously of their time, we would not be known as the “mouse that roared” (Terry Huff) by all of the other Texas Shrines.  Please pat yourselves on the back – you did a great job again and deserve it.

Remember our January meeting is Installation and Ladies Night.  It is now time to pass the gavel to Terry Martin and his Divan.  I know he and the Divan are well prepared for 2011 and have a full slate of activities for all of us to participate in.  Come Out and Support YOur new Divan.

Thanks again for your support – we have had a great time.

Bob and Winnie Hamblin
