2010 Recorder’s Corner

December 2010

Last column of the year, and, if Billy Bumgarner had not called me, I might have missed doing it! I was so busy [what, me busy?] that I forgot what day it was. Hope you all are ready for Christmas, because it is coming up fast. We have a lot of activities going on but we are NOT having a New Year’s Eve Party this year. It has been years since we broke even on that event, and Potentate Hamblin and the Divan decided we should just skip it.

We do have the Foster Kid’s party on the 13th, Stated Meeting on the 14th, and Maskat, Christmas Party on the 16th. We also have several Unit Parties through the month. So everyone put on your Santa Claus Suit and get out and enjoy the season! There is something for everyone.

We elect Divan Officers in December Stated Meeting. Come make your vote count. At last Stated Meeting two Nobles, Charles Dean and Bill Yates, announced their intentions to run for Oriental Guide. Both men are well qualified Shriners and ready to serve Maskat Temple. Jimmie Holland, our Treasurer since 1997, has decided to step down after a serious heart attack and surgery sidelined him. He is much better now, and Past Potentate Greg Stockton has asked to be considered for that position. All the other line officers are running to advance ‘up the ladder’ to the next office. I will serve as Recorder if I am elected.

Also at December Meeting, we vote to suspend Nobles who have not paid their dues. The list is relatively short this year, but that is not the point. The point is we need to keep them if at all possible. I read the list at the November Meeting. If you know someone on that Suspension List, please call them and encourage them to stay with us. Sometimes that is all it takes!

Merry Christmas, and I hope you and yours experience the joys of the season. And Thanks for being a Shriner, Nobles. The kids need you, and we need you!

November 2010

Hope October is treating you well. The weather has cooled considerably, and the only one I know who is upset about that is Cathy Stockton. She has a major depression each fall when she has to close up the pool. Can’t be long now, Cathy. I put my feet in our pool this morning for a couple of seconds. It’s pretty cool.

We gave out membership milestone awards this month, and we are going to have to mail a lot of them out! We had a lot of Nobles miss the meeting for one reason or another, but don’t worry, we will get them to you! We lost two long term Shriners in September, Nobles Don Thomas and Alguien Devoll. I’m sad to say Brother Devoll was supposed to receive a 60 year pin this month, and we got notice he had passed away. Our condolences go out to his family on their loss. It is tough to lose these long standing members.

Our Fall Ceremonial is November 13th, as I communicated last month. We had some conflicts, and finally resolved them. This is the New Nobles’ official welcome to Shrinedom, and it is completely open to any and all of their family members. We want them to know what Shriners do in the world, and this is our chance to show them. The program will start at 4:30 pm and last approximately an hour and a half.

We started Cowboy Football at Maskat last month; and, from its reception, it looks like we will continue the program. It is open to the Nobility, their families, and anyone else who is interested. It is a great way to get together, and we always have food. It is “potluck,” so bring your favorite dip or whatever. We have a nonsmoking section for those who need it! [ That’s where I am, usually].

If anyone is interested in running for the Oriental Guide position on the line, talk to me or any Divan member. It is a bit of a commitment, but I would not take any amount of money as trade for the experience. It enriched my life in many ways. I made friends all over the country and met and associated with people from all walks of life during those five years—people whose path I would never cross if it weren’t for the Shrine. For me, those five years were worth their weight in gold!

With our membership incentive program [get into Shrine FREE in 2010], we are getting a lot of interest. We could have a positive year in membership if our members will encourage their Blue Lodge Brothers to become Shriners in 2010. Please, talk with them about it!!! If not for the good of Maskat, for the children! They can come through during the Fall Ceremonial on November 13th!

Please know you truly make a difference for our children. Thanks for being a Shriner!

 October 2010

We present Membership Milestone Pins in October to Shriners who have reached a five year increment in membership. You will get a letter if you are scheduled to receive a 25-, 30-, 35-, 40-year, etc., pin in Maskat Temple. If you don’t get a letter and are thinking you are due a pin, please call the office. You may find it hard to believe, but we can and do make mistakes! Conner prompts his computer to tell him who has completed 25, 30, and more years, and it does. But, as many of you know, computers are not foolproof! I am not trying to tell you we are fools, but everybody in that office was born before computers were the “next big thing,” so draw your own conclusions.

We have taken in six new members this year, and Director Kirby Pacheco announced at Stated Meeting the Ceremonial would be November 13th. I will list everyone who has joined in 2010 in the November Wildcat because the Ceremonial is in their honor. As you know, we have Open Ceremonials, and wives and families are encouraged to attend. It is their official welcome to Maskat Temple, and we want it to be memorable! If any of us know a Master Mason who needs to be a Shriner, we should let the office have the name ASAP. Remember, It’s free to join in 2010!

The weekend before the Ceremonial is the Maskat Shrine Circus! It will be in the Kay Yeager MPEC, and it is always a fun event. Come out and bring the kids. It is a great circus, and kids of all ages love a circus. So come out and expect to be entertained!
Shrinefest is a major fundraiser for Maskat, and this year it lost money. Potentate Hamblin is trying to make the remainder of his money-making attempts as productive as possible. If you have not heard, we are having a Gun Raffle, and a $50.00 donation gives you a chance to win 52 long guns [rifles and shotguns]. Since it is using the numbers picked on Monday night’s Pick Three you could win more then once! If you want a ticket, or can sell tickets, call the office and we will take care of you. Bur we are trying to wrap it up in November, so make that call!

Assistant Rabban Poney Thompson had a Sporting Clays Shoot at the Field and Stream, and everyone that participated had a great time. Even better news–it netted $1,800.00 for Maskat! Then, Noble Edgar Shockley ran a Garage Sale at Maskat the next weekend and made Maskat around $900.00. The Gun Raffle has the potential to make much more than those fundraisers, IF WE SELL THE TICKETS. Please call MASKAT (940-766-4511) if you would like to purchase one [or several].

And thanks, everybody, for being a Shriner! Our fraternity needs your enthusiasm.

September 2010

Here it is time for another Recorder’s Column. Seems like I finish up one and another is staring me in the face! Lots coming up at Maskat, and most of it will have taken place already when you read this. We have the Masonic Fish Fry this weekend and Shrinefest the next Saturday. On September 11, Maskat is sponsoring a Sporting Clays Shoot at North Texas Field and Stream, and the Garage Sale has been rescheduled to Saturday, September 18th at Maskat. There is plenty to do, just pick your activity and dive in! All of these things (except the Garage Sale) take place before the Stated Meeting on September 14th.

We just returned from the Potentate’s Trip last Thursday, and everybody won money except Yours Truly [to hear them tell it]. Then, we get the tragic news of Noble Ray Walker’s death in Oregon on Sunday night. He and Mary were on a motorcycle trip through the Northwest on their Harley three-wheeler, and a car went out of control and collided with them. Mary is improving, but she has multiple broken bones and other injuries. Please keep them and all our members and families with health concerns in your prayers. I know it is a tough time for Ray’s family, and their children are at her side, which is a comfort.

We sure need good weather next weekend for Shrinefest! It is our major fundraiser for the Temple.  It costs money to make money, so we have a lot of money tied up in its production. It is fun to be involved in this event. If you are able, I hope you will attend. If you can’t make it, think dry weather for that day!

We are getting a lot of interest in our membership incentive program [get into Shrine FREE in 2010]. We could have a positive year in membership if our members will encourage their Blue Lodge Brothers to become Shriners in 2010. Please, talk with them about it!!! If not for the good of Maskat, for the children!

Please know you truly make a difference for our children. Thanks for being a Shriner!

 AUGUST 2010

Your Imperial Representatives went north to Toronto this year for the 2010 Imperial Council Session. That was a long way to go, but it will make Denver seem like a walk in the park in 2011. Overall, it was fun and informative. I’m here to tell you Texas has the best roads between here and there, and we went on different routes going and coming. In fact, most of the routes we took are terrible when compared to our roads. We are truly spoiled!

Enough about the roads, already! As most of you know, I officially became an emeritus representative at this year’s convention. What that means to me is that I survived the ballot box at Maskat Temple for fifteen years! What it means to Maskat Temple is we now have three voting reps attending conventions instead of two. You never know when that extra vote might prove advantageous for us. I will do my best to serve you well.

Our official name henceforth is SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL, by vote of the Imperial Reps. We have been moving toward a name change for the past few years. Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles Of The Mystic Shrine didn’t exactly roll off your tongue, and the AAONMS acronym wasn’t much better! It wasn’t even a close vote; I think everyone there was ready. We voted to officially charter two new temples–one in Puerto Rico, named Al Rai’e Saleh Shriners; the other in the Philippines, called Mabuhay Shriners. We also voted to place a Temple ‘Under Dispensation’ in Germany, named Emirat Shriners. If they “measure up” to the Articles of Incorporation, they will receive a Charter next year. A Temple can be considered “Under Dispensation” for a year or more.

That is really all the legislation that affects us directly here at Maskat. There were numerous proposals made; some passed, others were defeated. But they will not be felt here in Wichita Falls. The Public Relations program was very well done, as it usually is. Each year, the Hospitals highlight a couple of patient success stories. The two patients selected this year, Taylor Long and Danny Happy, represent our best work with orthopedic and burns patients. Taylor was born without a leg bone in either leg, a genetic anomaly that can only be remedied by amputating the lower legs and feet. He has been without limbs from the knees down since he was three months old. You can’t tell it by looking, though. He gets around better than most people, and he is a gifted singer. Wait until you see the DVD! The other young man, Danny Happy, was burned over 90% of his body. Both of these guys are living testimony to the great work done at Shriners Hospitals For Children. You have to see this DVD, especially if you are wondering if we are doing any good in this world. They showed the DVD, and then the boys and their families walked out on stage. Taylor sang, and both of them thanked the Shriners for what they do. You might watch the DVD without visible emotion, but I can guarantee there wasn’t a dry eye at the live presentation! Neither of these young men would be the same without Shriners, and they know it! Danny would very likely be dead without us. If that doesn’t make you proud to be a Shriner, nothing will!

I don’t need to tell you our biggest fundraiser is right around the corner–Shrinefest on August 28th at the land. The week before on August 21st , we are having a Masonic Family Fish Fry at the land. See details elsewhere in the issue! I am out of room!

As always, thank you for being a Shriner and making a difference in the lives of the children we serve! Think membership! It keeps our doors open!

 JULY 2010

For Shriners and Masons who have not heard, the week before Shrinefest, we are having a Masonic Family Fish Fry at the new pavilion at our land on Hatton Road.  That would be Saturday, August, 21st.  We will not make a penny on this, but Membership co-chair Alan Donaldson says the Blue Lodges could make a lot of money.  We will charge $15.00 for catfish and all the fixin’s, and the Blue Lodges will receive their share of ten bucks a ticket.  We intend to make catfish forfive bucks a plate, and may lose a little money.  We just want to make some friends!  If you want to make your Blue Lodge some money, it will get ten bucks for each fifteen dollar ticket you sell.

If you know a Mason who should be a Shriner, invite him to this event!  We are running a special on new memberships this year and may continue to do so in future years, depending on how well this works.  Every Mason who attends will be given a “Get Into Shrine Free” card at the event if he is not already a Shriner.  If a man joins Maskat Shrines this year, the initiation fee is zero!  Of course, he eventually has to buy his fez, but we sell it at our cost which is $110.00.  He will have to pay $109.00 dues for subsequent years, just like every other Shriner.  He will have to stay in at least a couple of years for us to recover our investment, but it’s up to us to make the experience fulfilling so he will want to stay! There has never been a better time to join Maskat Shriners!

As I have said for the last couple of months, please call the Maskat Office if you know a Mason who would make a good Shriner and give us his name.  We want to invite him to join us if you recommend him as a prospective member.  It is a bit of a gamble for us, but several Shrines are experiencing growth because of this program which is endorsed by the Imperial Membership Committee.  If a Shrine chooses to participate, it is strictly voluntary and many Shrines are trying it if they can afford it.  Times are tough financially, and we need to try to stimulate our growth by investing in our future.  Nothing is more important to our survival than membership; and our children depend on us to be here for them.  So remember:  Get Into Shrine, Free at the Masonic Family Fish Fry!

June was a flurry of activity.  We had Shrine All State the first weekend, Oil Bowl the second weekend, and Shootout for Shrinefest the third!  All State was fun. The Foot Patrol won their division, and Provost Guard won A Team, High individual shooter [Tim Bradberry], High Marshall [Rod Ney], first and second B Team and third D Team.  The Golf Team and the Shotgun Team also won trophies in their competitions!  The Con Vee drove us around in grand style and, as always, got a lot of positive attention for Maskat.  Janey Huff and Marquetta Dudley ran a great hospitality room despite the cramped conditions.  We got a lot of help, and I hope I didn’t leave anyone out!

As always, thank you for being a Shriner and making a difference in the lives of the children we serve!

Think membership!  It keeps our doors open!

  JUNE 2010

For Shriners who have not heard, the week before Shrinefest we are having a Masonic Family Fish Fry at the pavilion at the land on Hatton Road.  That would be Saturday, August, 21st.  We will not make a penny on this, but Membership co-chair Alan Donaldson says the Blue Lodges could make a lot of money.  We will charge $15.00 for catfish and all the fixin’s, and the Blue Lodges will receive a prorata share of ten bucks a ticket.  We intend to make catfish for five bucks a plate, and may lose a little money.  We just want to make some friends!  That is all the details I have at the moment, and I have no idea how the money will be split.

If you know a Mason who should be a Shriner, invite him to this event!  We are running a special on new memberships this year, and may continue to do it in future years, depending on how it works.  Every Mason who attends will be given a “Get Into Shrine, Free” card at that event if he is not already a Shriner.  If a man joins Maskat Shriners this year, the initiation fee is zero!  Of course, he has to buy his fez eventually, but we sell them at our cost, which is $110.00.  He will have to pay $109.00 for subsequent years, just like everyone else.  He will have to stay in at least a couple of years for us to recover our investment, but it’s up to us to make it fulfilling so he will want to stay! May is winding down, and that leads us into Texas Shrine Allstate which is June 3-5 in Fort Worth, followed by the Oil Bowl on June 12th  and, on June 19th, Shootout For Shrinefest at the pavilion.  That’s three major events back to back, and the Shootout is a Shriner’s Hospital Fund Raiser.   Make yourself a part of the activities!

As always, thank you for being a Shriner and making a difference in the lives of the children we serve!

Think membership!  It keeps our doors open!
